Avoiding Plagiarism
Students are exposed to:
1) what is plagiarism
2) The common type of plagiarism
3) How to prevent plagiarism when writing assignment, paper or report
What is plagiarism??
-an act of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own,as by not crediting the original author.
Example for plagiarism:
-turning in someone else’s work as your own
-copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
-failing to put a quotation in quotation
-giving incorrect information about the source of quotation
-changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
-copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of work, whether we give credit or not.
How to prevent plagiarism:
Paraphrasing
-express the meaning of (the writer or speaker or something writter or spoken) using different words, especially to achieve greater clarity.
Step to paraphrasing:
1)Exercising is very positive for the immune system people should exercise at least three times a week
→Exercising gives advantages to immune system, It should be done at least three times a week.
2)Part time job allows student to gain extra income to support their financial. However, student need to be wise in managing their time for work and study.
→Students can get additional income when they work part time. However, they must manage their time for work and study wisely.
Referencing
-one of the most important ways to avoid plagiarism is referencing.
-provide (a book or article) with citations of authorities
In text citation: Reference list:
- James(1886) -Jones,T.J(1988) name of book,page
Plan the paper
-we need to plan how to include other sources of information in our paper.
-there must be a balance between the ideas taken from other sources and our own ideas.
-writing an outline or coming with thesis statement in which we clearly formulate an argument about the information we will find help establish the boundaries between your ideas and those of our sources..
Take effective notes
-organize the information that we have found by taking through notes of all the sources before start writing.
-to avoid confusion about the sources, try using different colored fonts, pens or pencils for each one.
-make sure clearly distinguish our own ideas from those we found elsewhere.
-record bibliographic information or web addresses for every source right away.
Cite sources
-citing is one of the effective ways to avoid plagiarism.
-if it is unclear whether an idea in our paper real came from us, or whether we got it from somewhere else and just changed it a little, we should always cite your source.
-when quoting a source, use the quote exactly the way it appears.
-if the quotation is relatively short (usually fewer than 3 lines or 40 words),those words must be enclosed in quotation marks.
Calculating Grade Point Average
-to produce a holistic, entrepreneurial and balanced graduates
-the final examination results and assessments at the end of every semester are assigned a Grade Point Average(GPA) and a Cumulative Grade Point Average(CGPA) which represent a student’s academic achievement.
-this value shows the achievement in mastering the learning outcomes domain(LO)
-the student achievement for each program learning result is shown through a `spider webs’:
1) Knowledge and understanding
2) Practical skills
3) Social skills and responsibilities
4) Professional skills ethics and values
5) Communication, leadership and teamwork
6) Problem-solving skills and scientific
7) Information management and life-long learning
8) Entrepreneurship and management
9) Unity and patriotism
Example: `spider webs’
-A Grade Point Average(GPA) refers to the calculated average of the letter grades a student earns in each semester following a 0 to 4.0 scale.
-every semester, students receive a GPA based on the grades they earned in all their courses during that semester. The formula used for the calculations of the Grade Point Average (GPA) is as follow:
-to find GPA weighted by credits hour,we have to follow these steps:
1)Multiply each numeric grade value by the number of credits the course was worth.
2)Add those numbers together
3)Divide by the total number of credits we took
Example:
We have 6 subjects:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ (3.00+4.00+1.00+3.00+3.00+3.00) ]
GPA = 2.75
-Cumulative Grade Point Average(CGPA) refers to overall GPA, which includes dividing the number of quality points earned in all courses attempted by the total credit hours in all attempted courses.

= 46.68 + 53.35 + 51.66

= 2.92
