Wednesday / 26th of July 2017 / Dewan Kuliah Al-Farabi UiTM Pahang Jengka Campus
So..in this week, students should know how to :
1) Taking lectures notes
2) Effective note-taking systems
Taking Lectures Notes
1) Taking down ideas from lectures and leading in our own words
2) we must know the main idea
3) If we meet some lectures that not allow their student to write notes while they are talking?
-we have to courage and we must ask for permission to take notes
Why we have to take notes??
1) Helps us to pay attention in class
2) Helps us study for quiz, tests or final exam
3) Help us improve our memory
4) Help us ownership of ideas(like in a group assignment, changing the given ideas)
5) Help us engage our serves(focus our senses like eyes, hand and ears)
6) Help us organize and process data and information
7) Helps the lecture test students on how well to captured given information
How do we have to take notes?
1) Date and label notes
2) Give ourselves space to write
3) Use abbreviations and symbols
4) Use an outline to show : main ideas, supports ang example
5) Use our own language
Why review notes???? :
Why ‘recapture’ notes after class ?
1) Frees us up to write in quick, shorthand during class
2) An excellent test-prep strategy for reinforcing information
3) Better that re-copying, this time we’re digesting and rephrasing
4) Great for kinesthetic learners
5) Can catch? S, gaps, look-up words
6) Prompts higher-level questions
7) Save hours of studying and review the days before
As we study the review notes, our instructor give us activity 1 : we play the WHISPER GAMES. It was so fun and the result is at the back, the first sentences seem to change. It is because some people forgot because we just use our ears and NOT TAKING NOTES. So, takes notes is important guys.. :D
Introductory Questions : what materials do we need
Before the class
1) Review the notes from the day before (we will know what we will learn)
2) Review our reading assignment (make sure we have paper, text, pens, pencils and handout)
3) Write the date at the top of the paper for notes
4) Leaves space between the lines so that we can add information later
How do we prepare for a class
1) Do pre-reading and homework
2) Review syllabus
3) Preview previous notes
4) Look up keywords prior to class
5) Plan on listening 80% at the time
6) Write the date at the top of our paper for notes
7) Leave space
How do we review after a class
1) Review notes along with the book
2) Create our own examples
3) Discuss and compare notes with others
4) Re-write notes
5) Practice those skills you wish to develop
6) Ask professor for the clarification
Physical factors
- sit near the front and center :
1) Better vision
2) Better hearing
3) Avoid distractions (doorways, window glare, etc)
4) Peers
-while taking notes
1) Be an aggressive not a passive listener
2) Ask question and discuss if its permitted
3) If jot questions, write in notes and seek out the meaning
-mood of lecturer
1) Observation is the KEY (professional students)
2) The Key to note as we observe our instructor
-be alert to repetition (when the instructor repeats a specific point, make a note of it)
-watch the board or overheard projector (if the instructor writes something down, the material’s is important)
-notice the instructor’s interest level (if the instructor is excited about something, it is likely to be on an exam)
-let go of judgments about lecture styles (don’t let our attitude about an instructor’s style get in the way of our education)
What happens when the instructor isn’t too interesting????
-when we notice our attention slipping, pay attention to the ACT of writing
-Ask question even the questions maybe ‘dumb’ on the mind of several classmates
-volunteer demonstration and discussion
Conts
Keen observes focus their attention on the details and make the most of their time during lectures by preparing and reviewing BEFORE THE LECTURE EVEN STARTS!
-complete outside assignments, the more familiar we are with a subject, the easier it will be to understand in class
-bring the right materials to the lecture
Effective note-taking system
cornell method
-this note method is so good because of the summary is very useful for the exam
